Folks at Thistledown love the Derby so much, that they spend time creating cocktail drinks every year to celebrate the Derby. You are sure to find new and interesting tastes developing at Thistledown.

Inspired by the Kentucky Derby, the new cocktail drink called The Black Gold was born. It is one of the hottest drinks available in Kentucky at the moment. The Black Gold cocktail is served at the Thistledown who have experimented with new cocktails every year. Previous cocktails included the Derby Daiquiri and the Ohio Derby Royale.

The Black Gold has mint julep which gives a unique taste to the cocktail. If you can't get your hands on The Black Gold cocktail, then try making your own cocktail recipe to celebrate the Derby.

The Goldfish Cocktail Recipe

The Goldfish Cocktail Recipe
© wong168.files.wordpress.com

Looking for a fun way to spice up an otherwise dull evening? I recently ran across an article, Herbal Liquer Makes Cocktail Gold, by Gary Regan of The San Francisco Chronicle. The article is about a recipe known as the Goldfish Cocktail. This recipe can also be found in the book "On the Town in New York," by Michael Batterberry. The drink was originally served during prohibition at a speakeasy in New York known as the Aquarium.

The drink is made with a herbal liquer known as Goldwasser. This liquer is similar to Goldshlager in the sense that it has tiny flakes of 24kt gold in the mix. I have a feeling that it might taste just a bit different than Goldshlager, however. Unlike GoldShlager, Goldwasser is said to have a strong caraway flavor.

Anyway this is recipe as published by Batterberry and Regan:

Goldfish Cocktail

Makes 1 drink

2 ounces dry gin
1 ounce dry vermouth
3/4 ounce Danziger Goldwasser (or Goldshlager if you have no other choice)

Instructions: Combine all ingredients in a mixing glass. Add ice, stir and strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

Enjoy!

Non-Alcoholic Cocktails for the World Cup

Filed in archive Summer Cocktails on June 19, 2010

Continuing our series of cocktails to enjoy during the World Cup, we thought we'd check out some non-alcoholic options, for those who prefer their drinks that way. Courtesy of the NHS, here are a pick of the ones that stand out to us. Below are representatives from joint-favourites Brazil and an outside team who are looking very strong at the minute, Mexico.

Non-Alcoholic Caipirinha

Ginger Ale
Sugar (2 teaspoons)
Diced lime, lemon and orange

Put the fruit in a jug and add the sugar. Stir until the juices release from the fruit and strain the mix into tumblers filled with ice. Top off with the ginger ale.

Lime Juice (1 shot)
Sour Mix (3 shots)
